My sweet girlfriend bought me my first KitchenAid mixer years ago for my 21st birthday. I cried when she gave it to me, admiring it in all of its bright turquoise-blue glory. I have loved this mixer and used it to death. I’m actually shocked I haven’t had to replace it yet.
But, alas, all good things come to an end. I do not have a burning passion for bright blue as much as I once did, and so I decided to give her a lil’ makeover. It was a pretty easy process and only took me a single afternoon.
*Disclaimer*– If you follow this tutorial, do so at your own risk. Even though mine turned out beautiful and has held up for several months, it’s DEFINITELY not perfect. There’s a few little spots that are a little bit rough/ugly, but that’s okay with me. Just thought I’d throw that out there.
Step one: Materials
You’ll need:
- 120 grit sandpaper
- painter’s tape
- flathead & regular screwdriver
- spray paint primer (I used Rust-oleum painters touch)
- Spray paint in the color of your choice (I used Rust-oleum metallic in the shade Champagne Bronze)
- Spray paint enamel (I used Rust-oleum Crystal Clear Enamel)
- A wet rag (for wiping after sanding)
- Some cardboard, garbage bags, or paint drop cloths (whatever you want to use to protect your space from paint)
Step two: Cleaning and disassembling
After you gather your materials, clean that sucker good. I mean truly get into every single crack and crevice, and unscrew as many pieces as you can in order to give it a good deep clean. I was able to remove the silver band that’s on the front of the machine, and the disc where the bowl is locked into place. Place the parts inside a baggie and make sure you don’t misplace the screws.
Step three: Sanding & taping
Once your machine is nice and clean, tape off all the places you do not want to cover in paint, such as the levers, mixer attachment springs, the cord, etc. Then sand it down enough to take the shine off and give the spray paint something to grip onto. After sanding, wipe it down with a wet rag to remove the dust.
Step four: Priming and painting (a.k.a. the fun part!)
Now that all the boring stuff is over, it’s time to paint! Make sure to paint from all different angles, and give your machine a few light coats of primer, letting it dry in between each coat. At this point, I was tempted to just leave my mixer white because I thought it was so beautiful.
Once your primer is completely dry, carefully coat your mixer with a thin coat of your colored spray paint. Make sure you walk around and really get into all the little spaces. Let it dry, then repeat that process until you’re satisfied with the coverage.
Step five: Sealing and reassembly
You’re almost done! After you’ve given your mixer plenty of time to dry (a few hours at least), it’s time to seal its new beautiful color with some enamel. Repeating a similar process to priming/painting, give your mixer a few thin coats of enamel, letting it dry between each coat.
Once that’s all dry, it’s time to put ‘er back together. Replace all the pieces you had taken off during the cleaning process and voila! Admire your beautiful work and enjoy your mixer for years to come!
